1.Grammer : “ra / ro” — Formal vs Spoken Persian

In formal Persian, the object marker is “ra.”
In spoken Persian, people almost always say “ro.”

This is one of the biggest differences between written and spoken Persian.

Examples

FormalSpokenEnglish
man ramanome
to ratoroyou
u raunohim/her

Sentence Example

Formal:

  • to man ra keshandi dadgah

Spoken:

  • to mano keshundi dadgah

Meaning:

You dragged me to court.

Important Note

In real-life Persian conversations, people usually say:

  • mano
  • toro
  • uno

instead of:

  • man ra
  • to ra
  • u ra

2. Formal vs Spoken Persian

Real spoken Persian is much softer, shorter, and faster than textbook Persian.

nemikhaham → nemikham

Formal:

  • nemikhaham

Spoken:

  • nemikham

Meaning:

I don’t want

nemitavanam → nemitunam

Meaning:

I can’t

Spoken Persian simplifies sounds.

midanam → midunam

Meaning:

I know

The “ā” sound often changes into “u” in speech.

miavaram → miaram

Meaning:

I bring

Sounds are dropped to make speech easier and faster.

che kar kardi → chikar kardi

Meaning:

What did you do?

Very natural and common in spoken Persian.

General Pattern in Spoken Persian

In conversational Persian:

  • sounds become shorter
  • some letters disappear
  • pronunciation becomes smoother and faster

Examples:

FormalSpoken
mikhahammikham

che karchikar

This happens everywhere in everyday Persian speech.
